Wood and MDF boards
Fibre board can be flame retarded with Apyrum. To flame retard particle board, MDF, OSB, and plywood etc. Apyrum is used in liquid form during the production of the board through an impregnation process that treats the wood fibres/binders. Apyrum then penetrates into the fibre causing the fibre to somewhat increase in weight and thereby become flame retarded. Different fire classes can be met depending on how much flame retardant is applied and taking into consideration the other properties of the board. EN 13501 Class B/C is an example of a fire class that has been met through the use of Apyrum.
The application process
The most common and best method of application is to impregnate the wood fibre through a mixing process that takes place prior to drying and binding. The fibre should absorb Apyrum, which should be well-dispersed throughout the fibre. An even dispersion can be attained by regulating the amount of water used. The binder’s hardening time can be affected, and the parameters of the process must be adjusted to different products.
The amount of active substance is important as the balance between the active substance, binder, amount of fibre, as well as the density of the board and it’s inherent fire properties are that which determines the result.
Choice of Apyrum product
The product that is used in the manufacturing of fibre board is Apyrum BIO-FR CANVAS or Apyrum BIO-FR WOOD; a liquid product consisting of water and Apyrum in the form of a water-soluble salt.
The amount of active substance is adapted through optimization to the material’s fire properties and to the degree of fire protection that is required. We have different variations of Apyrum that are suited to different boards, systems of binding, and processes.
The properties of Apyrum Liquid are:
- Density: 1,4 g/ml
- pH: 5,5 – 9 (Our standard product has pH 7)
- Viscosity: Approximately the same as water
- Packaging for delivery: Cans, drums, 1000 litre containers
About Apyrum BIO-FR CANVAS
A water-based flame retardant based on Apyrum BIO-FR LIQUID and used for impregnation of fibrous and absorbent material. The product has very good ability to be absorbed by porous materials such as paper, wood, natural fibers and non-woven.
About Apyrum BIO-FR WOOD
A water-based flame retardant based on Apyrum BIO-FR LIQUID and used for impregnation of fibrous and absorbent material. The product has the ability to be absorbed by porous materials, and especially wood.
Fire testing and properties of the board
Apyrum meets extremely stringent fire requirements. For example, fire class EN 13501 Class B/C can be attained. This means that the board is self-extinguishing as soon as the flame is removed.
